By ending the story in 1988, the film conveniently dodges the controversies, allegations, and darker side of Jackson’s later decades. The script infantalizes Michael, painting him exclusively as a misunderstood, Peter Pan-reading saint whose only real flaw is wanting to be too perfect. Cinematography? All Flash, No Soul, the cinematography only hits during the Thriller/Bad music videos cos it takes you back in time. However, the second Michael steps off the stage, the visual language flatlines. The dramatic, behind-the-scenes moments are shot with a sterile, generic biopic gloss. It feels like a slick corporate commercial rather than a gritty look at the incredibly isolating, turbulent reality of the superstar Michael Jackson The Verdict "Michael" is a phenomenal concert tribute act trapped inside a painfully hollow movie.
