Cyberpunk:Edgerunners vs The Apothecary Diaries:

Cyberpunk:Edgerunners vs The Apothecary Diaries: Which One Should You Watch?

Let's talk about these two great animes but before that, picture two very different doors. Behind one door is a neon city that swallows up dreamers.

Behind the other is a candlelit palace where a poisoned cup can end a life.

Both are coming this fall, and both will have you hooked. Which should you step through first?

The Storylines:

Edgerunners could break your heart. It follows David, a kid from the wrong side of Night City who loses everything in a single night, then climbs into the world of mercenaries and chrome upgrades to survive.

From the start you already know that the road is a dangerous one, but the story makes you love its crew anyways. When a character dies, it hurts because you spent episodes caring about these people. It's short, fast, and emotionally brutal.

The Apothecary Diaries is more of a slow, warm feeling. It talks about Maomao, a girl who is sold into the emperor's rear palace and wants to keep her head down, until a mystery involving poison is too tempting to ignore. Each case is a puzzle, and each puzzle peels back another layer of palace politics. The emotion here is quieter: small kindnesses, hidden loyalties, and a tension that builds for seasons. It rewards patience.

The Heroes:

(Are They Really Good)

David is good in the way a tragedy needs. He's relatable and easy to root for, but his story follows a familiar shape, and it works because of how well it's executed.

Maomao is the more original hero. She's sharp, blunt, and obsessed with poisons, and she solves problems with her brain instead of powerups. A hero who is this clever and still doesn't act like a chosen one feels fresh.

The Villains:

(Evil or Misunderstood)

Edgerunners keeps its villainy big and cold. Arasaka, the megacorporation, and its cyborg enforcer Adam Smasher aren't misunderstood. They're a force of nature, and that's the point. The world itself is the antagonist.

The Apothecary Diaries goes the other way. There's no single big bad wolf, and the people behind the poisonings and plots are often driven by desperation, ambition, or old grudges. That grey area keeps you guessing, and sometimes it makes you sympathize with the person you were supposed to hate.

Fights, Art, and Style

If you want spectacle, Edgerunners delivers just that.

The art is loud, neon-soaked, and hyperkinetic, and the fights are fast and bloody.

The Apothecary Diaries barely fights at all. Its beauty is in the palace architecture, the elaborate costumes, and the tension of a conversation where one wrong word could be fatal.

So, Which One Should You Watch?

If you want high res action, a gut-punch ending, and a story that stays with you after a single sitting, watch Edgerunners.

If you want a clever heroine, mystery with a long payoff, and a world you can settle into for seasons, watch The Apothecary Diaries.

Honestly, a smart plan is to watch both. Start with Edgerunners for the adrenaline, then settle into the palace.
