The Backstory of Muzan and Kokushibo.
Long before the shadow of the Infinity Castle fell across Japan, In the Heyan Era, a noble was born sick. He was weak from birth.
Doctors told his family he would never survive to adulthood. He was a source of pity and shame, a silent burden in a world that valued strength. This patient, the man who would become Muzan Kibutsuji, was terrified. Every shallow breath was a reminder of his expiration date. He survived. But survival wasn't enough. He wanted to live. His family, desperate, brought him an alchemist who spoke of a miraculous medicine: the blue spider lily. The patient was skeptical. He watched the alchemist mix the blue petals with ancient elixirs, a glowing concoction that promised vitality. In a fit of delirious rage and hopelessness, the patient ingested the imperfect potion. He felt a surge of strength, a warmth he had never known. But the cure was a curse. He was stronger, faster, healthier than any human... but only in darkness. This man, the first demon to walk across Japan, looked upon the sun with hatred. His new life began with a horrifying realization: he may never feel or see the sunrise again. This initial human moment of fear hardened into centuries of narcissistic obsession to find and craft himself into the perfect being and the eradication of his final weakness.
Centuries later, in the Sengoku Era, a different kind of man walked the earth. Michikatsu Tsugikuni was not weak. He was a high-ranking, respected samurai of the Tsugikuni clan. He was disciplined, powerful, and respected. Yet, his heart was a void. The cause of his emptiness was his own twin brother, Yoriichi. Yoriichi was everything Michikatsu wanted to be. While Michikatsu trained until his hands bled to master the sword, Yoriichi picked up a weapon for the first time and defeated a master. Yoriichi was a natural user of the original breathing technique, the Sun Breathing. To the critical eye of Michikatsu, Yoriichi was born marked by the gods, while he was born a mere man. Michikatsuâs respect for his brother curdled into jealousy. Every victory his brother achieved felt like a personal insult, a confirmation of his own inferiority. The harder Michikatsu trained, the further the gap seemed to grow. He learned to wield the sword with devastating skill, but he was always the moon to Yoriichi's sunâa beautiful reflector, but never the light source. When the Demon Slayers were formed, Michikatsu joined, hoping to finally eclipse his brother. He mastered Moon Breathing. Yet, he saw Yoriichi move with such innate grace that it sickened him. He realized that no amount of human practice could close the gap. He was limited by flesh, blood, and mortality. This deep, human inferiority is what made him vulnerable. He didn't want power just to dominate; he wanted power just to surpass his own perceived failure. Muzan, still seeking the perfect body and the blue spider lily, heard of the legendary samurai twins. He was drawn to the strength of Michikatsu. He saw not a slayer, but an ideal vessel. When Muzan finally confronted Michikatsu, the samurai didn't attack. He listened. Muzan, sensing the profound envy in the samuraiâs soul, made an offer that appealed not to ambition, but to Michikatsu's twisted sense of justice. "Your brother was born perfect. You must make yourself perfect through time and effort. Become a demon and time would be nothing but hands on a clock." Muzan didn't just offer strength; he offered an eternity to pursue a goal that only another flawed human could understand. Michikatsu accepted the blood. His multiple eyes opened with a new, alien focus. His human mark expanded and warped. He looked at his handânow pale, sharp-clawed, and immortalâand felt a cold peace. He had broken free from the cage of mortality that bound his brother. The moment he surrendered his humanity, he had, in his own mind, finally taken a step his brother never could. Muzan now had a servant whose strength was born not just from demon blood, but from unparalleled mastery of the sword. Kokushiboâthe First Moon breathing userâbecame Muzan's most efficient engine of slaughter and knowledge. They were a perfect, unholy alignment: the weak man who had found eternity, and the strong man who had surrendered humanity to achieve it.
