Former Scream star Melissa Barrera has revealed she is open to returning to the iconic slasher franchise, but only if the current rights holders step aside.

During a recent interview with JustWatch, Barrera was asked about potentially reprising her role as Sam Carpenter. While she expressed love for the series, she made it unequivocally clear that a return is completely off the table under Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group. "Not with the company that currently holds the rights," she stated. "I love the franchise. I had an amazing time making those movies." Barrera, who led 2022's Scream and 2023's Scream VI, was fired by Spyglass in November 2023 over social media posts regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. The actress noted that the studio's leadership unfairly labelled her and never offered an apology. "Even with an apology, I wouldn't go back to work with them," Barrera explained. "So, not that I'm holding my breath. I don't think they have that ability. But if the franchise were ever to leave those hands and go into hands that I think honor Wes Craven's legacy more, I think yeah."

The Franchise Fallout Following Barrera's dismissal, Scream 7 underwent major creative overhauls and was released earlier this year. Franchise veteran Matthew Lillard recently expressed deep regret over participating in the franchise after her firing, stating, "I feel bad about that. I feel ashamed about that." Scream 8 is reportedly already in development with writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, though cast and release details remain unconfirmed.
